Paris Saint-Germain Edges Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired two times late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital leveler in the dying moments to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
