The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
